Atlanta Braves minor league manager Luis Salazar has undergone surgery and was scheduled for more after being hit in the face by Brian McCann’s foul liner while standing in the dugout during an exhibition game. Salazar was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center after getting hit Wednesday. Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said Thursday that Salazar underwent surgery Wednesday night and “he’s having more surgery today.” Hainje said “it may be another day or two before we have final clarification on everything they had to do.” Braves general manager Frank Wren said Salazar may have sustained a concussion and might have a facial fracture and damage around his left eye. | Sports › Braves invite Kawakami to spring training
NEW YORK — The Atlanta Braves on Wednesday named right-hander Kenshin Kawakami among 20 non-roster invitees to spring training. Kawakami had a rough 2010, going 1-10 with a 5.15 ERA in 18 games, 16 of them starts. He was sent to Triple-A Gwinnett in August while making just three major league appearances between July and September. The 35-year-old hurler, who was removed from the 40-man roster after the season, will be in the final year of his three-year deal this term. Kawakami has gone 8-22 with a 4.32 ERA in 50 appearances (41 starts) since joining the Braves from the Chunichi Dragons in January 2009. © 2011 Kyodo News. All rights reserved. | Braves don’t let snow days slow them down
By Mark Bowman / MLB.com | 01/12/11 4:36 PM EST Downtown Atlanta was quiet and covered by ice on Tuesday. (David Goldman/AP) ATLANTA — Looking to avoid the “cabin fever” sensation created by the effects of this week’s ice storm in Atlanta, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez and pitching coach Roger McDowell helped each other clean their respective driveways Tuesday afternoon. Given a chance to escape their suburban Atlanta neighborhood Wednesday, Gonzalez and McDowell chose to take their new shoveling expertise elsewhere. In the process, they quickly learned that not all driveways are created equal. “I’ve got your headline for tomorrow: ‘Pitching coach dead from exhaustion,’” McDowell said. “We didn’t realize how big skipper’s driveway was.” Having escaped Atlanta a few hours before the snow and ice arrived Sunday, former Braves manager Bobby Cox was sitting under the sun in Mexico on Wednesday afternoon while Gonzalez and McDowell were cleaning his driveway by ridding it of some of the ice that blanketed and paralyzed Atlanta through the early portion of this week. As the roads started to improve Wednesday, Gonzalez was already starting to make plans to drive to Turner Field on Thursday to interact with some of the club’s other members and likely watch Chipper Jones take batting practice. Jones was encouraged on Friday, when he took batting practice for the first time since tearing the ACL in his left knee in August. Gonzalez had initially planned to get his first glimpse of Jones on Monday. But like most of Atlanta’s other residents, Jones has remained close to home the past couple of days, unable to do some of the things he had planned. The 38-year-old third baseman has at least been able to take advantage of the weights and treadmill in the exercise room of his suburban Atlanta home. “It’s good that I’ve been able to spend an hour or two down there every day,” Jones said. “But I’m getting kind of feverish and want to get out there and run, take some swings and run some sprints. If I tried to run a sprint in my neighborhood right now, I’d bust my butt.” The icy hills that exist in Jones’ neighborhood might have delayed some of his outdoor rehab work. But he says his children have enjoyed the sledding opportunities the terrain has provided them this week. “We’ve got some big hills and some big driveways in this neighborhood,” Jones said. “There’s some good sledding out there.” These certainly weren’t the conditions that Braves right-handed reliever Peter Moylan was expecting to see when he returned from his native Australia last week. When the icy conditions essentially brought Atlanta to a standstill Monday, Moylan tweeted, “So how does this work, are all the shops closed? Is anyone in ATL working?” By the time Thursday arrives, Jones and many of Atlanta’s other citizens would like to count themselves lucky enough to start working again. As for Gonzalez and McDowell, they’re simply happy they won’t have to shovel Cox’s spacious driveway again any time soon. Mark Bowman is a reporter for MLB.com.
