Brian McCann homered twice and the Atlanta Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 8-3 Thursday.

McCann hit a three-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the seventh for his eighth career multi-homer game. Michael Bourn had a career high-tying four hits, scored two runs, and drove in a run.

Marlon Byrd homered and Tyler Colvin added a triple and a run for the Cubs, who committed four errors.

Brandon Beachy (7-2) won his fourth straight decision, recovering from a shaky start to pitch six innings. He allowed six hits, two earned runs and struck out eight.

Matt Garza (6-10) allowed six runs — three earned — and eight hits over five innings. He struck out six.

The Braves took three of four from the Cubs and have won 16 of their last 21 games. Atlanta won its NL-high 38th road game.

Garza was coming off one of his best starts of the season in a 3-0 win over St. Louis last Saturday.

After Bourn led off the game with a single, Martin Prado reached when Garza dropped a flip from Carlos Pena at first. Garza then fell behind McCann, who homered into a stiff wind in right-center and put the Braves ahead 3-0 before Garza had retired a batter.

Prado reached on errors twice in the game, doubled, walked and scored two runs.

The Cubs cut into the lead on Darwin Barney’s groundout in the bottom of the first. In the second, Byrd brought Cubs within a run with a homer to left. Colvin tripled into the right-field corner and scored on Geovany Soto’s dribbler, tying the game at 3.

The Braves grabbed the lead right back with two runs in the third with help from the Cubs. Castro committed his NL-high 22nd error of the season and Garza walked Dan Uggla with the bases full. Freddie Freeman’s RBI single drove in the other run.

The Braves tacked on a run in the fifth on Jason Heyward’s sacrifice fly and another on McCann’s solo shot in the seventh. McCann leads NL catchers with 22 home runs on the season.

Bourn drove in a run in the eighth with his fourth single of the game, giving him his sixth career four-hit game. Bourn’s 160 hits are second in the NL to Castro’s 167.

The Cubs have committed 108 errors this season, most in the majors. Four of Atlanta’s runs were unearned.

NOTES: Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano was given a day off on Thursday after he was hit in the right forearm by a pitch during Wednesday’s game. Manager Mike Quade said Soriano was available for pinch-hitting duty and is expected to return to the lineup on Friday. . Braves RHP Tommy Hanson left the team and returned to Atlanta to have his ailing shoulder re-evaluated by team doctors. Hanson has been on the disabled list since Aug. 7 because of right rotator cuff tendinitis. . Manager Fredi Gonzalez said the Braves are “closely monitoring” Hurricane Irene and the effect it might have on this weekend’s series in New York against the Mets. . The Braves open a three-game series at New York on Friday, pitting RHP Tim Hudson against Mets lefty Chris Capuano. Hudson has won eight of his last nine decisions. . The Cubs will make the short trip north to face the first-place Brewers in Milwaukee this weekend, with Chicago RHP Rodrigo Lopez squaring off against LHP Randy Wolf in Friday’s opener. . Chicago’s Aramis Ramirez doubled in the eighth, his 700th career extra-base hit, and extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

The Atlanta Braves’ biggest offseason addition is finally coming up with big hits.

Dan Uggla belted a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, Brandon Beachy combined with two relievers on a three-hitter and Atlanta beat Florida 5-0 on Friday night to end the Marlins’ five-game winning streak.

Uggla extended his hitting streak to 20 games and leads Atlanta with 19 homers. He entered July with a .176 batting average but is up to .206 after going 1 for 4 against Florida.

“It really felt good,” Uggla said. “I tried not to put too much on it other than it put us ahead and put us in position to win.”

The Braves acquired Uggla, a native of Columbia, from Florida over the winter, sending left-hander Mike Dunn and infielder Omar Infante to the Marlins.

The Braves remained five games behind NL East-leading Philadelphia, which beat Pittsburgh 10-3 and acquired All-Star right fielder Hunter Pence from Houston.

“They’re good. They’re making every move you can make to go for it,” Uggla said of the Phillies.

“They’re a good team, but we are, too, and there are a lot of other good teams that are going to make the playoffs.”

Emilio Bonifacio’s 26-game hitting streak, the second-longest in Marlins history, came to an end. After two strikeouts, Bonifacio was thrown out trying to bunt his way on, then grounded out to third in the eighth.

Marlins Manager Jack McKeon said he thought Bonifacio was thinking about the streak early in the game.

“I talked to him. I said ‘Hey, start a new streak,’ ” McKeon said. “He went up there trying to get that hit that first time. Hey, stay with your game. … The first time I really felt that he really thought about it.”

Beachy (4-2) yielded two hits, walked three and struck out six in 71/3 innings. He pitched into the eighth for the first time in his career.

“Outstanding performance,” Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He went up and down the strike zone, down and in.

”He was dominant today.“

Eric O’Flaherty recorded the final two outs in the eighth and Scott Linebrink pitched around Gaby Sanchez’s one-out double in the ninth, striking out Logan Morrison to end the game.

Jose Constanza, recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett before the game, had a run-scoring single against Dunn in the eighth for his first hit in the major leagues. Constanza scored from third on Freddie Freeman’s fly ball to left.

Clay Hensley (1-3) matched Beachy before fading quickly in the seventh. Hensley gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

ATLANTA — While Freddie Freeman continues to add to his Rookie of the Year credentials, the Braves’ biggest offseason addition, Dan Uggla, is finally coming up with big hits, too.

Uggla belted a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, and Brandon Beachy combined with two relievers on a three-hitter to help the Braves beat Florida 5-0 on Friday night in the series opener.

Freeman went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while raising his batting average to .295 and raising his RBI total to 52.

The Braves’ victory ended the Marlins’ five-game winning streak.

Uggla extended his hitting streak to 20 games and leads Atlanta with 19 homers. He entered July with a .176 batting average but is up to .206 after going 1-for-4 on Friday.

“It really felt good,” Uggla said.

“I tried not to put too much on it other than it put us ahead and put us in position to win.”

The Braves acquired Uggla from Florida over the winter, sending left-hander Mike Dunn and infielder Omar Infante to the Marlins.

Emilio Bonifacio’s 26-game hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-4 night.

It was the second-longest in Marlins history.

Beachy (4-2) yielded two hits, walked three and struck out six in 7 1-3 innings. He pitched into the eighth for the first time in his career.

“Outstanding performance,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He went up and down the strike zone, down and in. He was dominant today.”

Constanza scored from third on Freeman’s fly ball to left.

Uggla connected on an 0-1 pitch from Hensley, raising his right fist in the air as the ball cleared the wall in center.

NOTE: Uggla’s hitting streak is the longest for the Braves since Kelly Johnson hit in 22 straight games from Sept. 1-24, 2008.

Gotta run!.

ATLANTA (AP) — Julio Lugo scored from third base on a contested play at the plate, giving the Atlanta Braves a 4-3 win in 19 innings over the Pittsburgh Pirates early Wednesday morning.

The game, which ended at 1:50 2 a.m., was the longest in Turner Field history and matched the longest in the major leagues this season. At 6 hours, 39 minutes, it was the longest by time for both teams.

Lugo took on Scott Proctor’s grounder to third baseman Pedro Alvarez, whose throw to catcher Michael McKenry easily beat Lugo to the plate.

Lugo tried to avoid McKenry’s tag with a pop-up slide. Replays indicated McKenry made the tag, but home plate umpire Jerry Meals called Lugo safe.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle argued the call vigorously, following Meals off the field as the Braves celebrated.

With one out in the 19th, Daniel McCutchen walked Lugo. Jordan Schafer followed with a single to center, moving Lugo to third.

With their bench and bullpen depleted, the Braves had to let Proctor (2-3), their eighth pitcher of the game, hit for himself. Schafer advanced to second without a throw before Proctor’s grounder led to the final play.

The Phillies and Reds played 19 innings on May 25.

The Pirates’ previous longest game was 6:12 at San Diego on Aug. 25, 1979. The Braves’ previous longest game by time was 6:10 against the Mets on July 4, 1985, at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

The Pirates scored two runs in the first and pushed their lead to 3-0 in the second on McKenry’s homer. The Braves answered with three runs in the third, and the score remained 3-3 through the next 15 innings.

Several thousand fans from the announced crowd of 22,036 were still in the stands in the 19th inning, many standing and chanting.

The Braves lost catcher Brian McCann in the 10th inning when he strained his left oblique. He will be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

McCutchen (3-2) gave up one run in 5 1-3 innings.

The Pirates fell one game behind first-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

The Pirates had a chance to avoid extra innings but wasted a scoring chance in the ninth. McKenry had an infield single off Craig Kimbrel and moved to third on pinch-hitter Brandon Wood’s single.

The Braves called a pitchout as Xavier Paul was squaring to bunt and McKenry was running toward the plate. McKenry stopped too late and was thrown out at third. Kimbrel struck out Paul to end the inning.

Atlanta’s Chipper Jones, who strained his right quadriceps in Monday night’s game, hit a groundout as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Jones, 39, came off the 15-day disabled list on Monday following arthroscopic surgery on July 9 to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

Nate McLouth and manager Fredi Gonzalez were ejected by Meals in the ninth. McLouth struck out swinging and then remained at the plate, apparently to argue a called strike two by Meals. Gonzalez ran onto the field too late to intervene and keep McLouth in the game.

NOTES: It was the Pirates’ longest game since May 27, 2006, when they beat Houston 8-7 in 18 innings. It was the Braves’ longest since Oct. 5, 2006, when they won 7-6 at Houston in 18 innings…. McKenry ended the Pirates’ streak of 77 innings without a homer since a shot by Brandon Wood at Houston on July 16. … Schafer, still bothered by his jammed left middle finger he hurt Wednesday in Colorado, was scratched from the Braves’ lineup. He entered the game in the ninth as a defensive replacement in center. … Pirates C Ryan Doumit (left ankle sprain) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis.

That’s all the news for today.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Alex Gonzalez hit the go-ahead RBI single and Brian McCann added a two-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the Atlanta Braves to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

It was the second straight extra-inning game for the teams, following Philadelphia’s 3-2 victory in 10 innings Friday.

The Braves (54-37) have won 10 of 12, and closed the Phillies’ lead in the NL East to 2.5 games. Philadelphia (56-34) remains one win shy of tying the club record for victories in the first half.

Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee accounted for the Phillies’ only run with his first career homer off Tommy Hanson, but both pitchers were gone by the time this one ended.

Pinch-hitter Eric Hinske led off the 11th for the Braves with a walk off Michael Stutes (3-1), and pinch-runner Wilkin Ramirez went to second on Jordan Schafer’s sacrifice. First baseman Ryan Howard could have gotten the second out, but he failed to make a tough over-the-shoulder catch of Gonzalez’s foul pop fly. It was ruled “no play,” and two pitches later, Gonzalez lined a single to center, scoring Ramirez and putting the Braves ahead 2-1.

McCann followed by launching Stutes’ 1-2 pitch into the seats in right.

George Sherrill (2-1) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 10th to earn the victory, allowing two hits and striking out one. Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless 11th for his 28th save in 33 chances.

Neither Lee nor Hanson earned a decision, although both were worthy of a win. Lee pitched eight innings, allowing three hits and striking out nine while walking two. Lee had won each of his past six home starts and now stands at 7-1 at home while lowering his ERA to 1.61 at Citizens Bank Park this season.

After having his 34-inning scoreless streak snapped in his last start at Toronto, when he gave up seven runs — six earned — in 7.1 innings, Lee was back to being the pitcher who went 5-0 with a 0.21 ERA in June. His only blemish Saturday was Dan Uggla’s homer on the first pitch of the fifth inning. Other than that, Lee allowed just one base runner to reach second.

Hanson was equally dominant, scattering four hits while striking out six and walking one. Aside from Lee’s third-inning solo homer, the only Phillies batter to advance to second was John Mayberry Jr., who doubled in the sixth. The right-hander was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning after tossing seven innings, and the no-decision snapped Hanson’s career-high streak of five straight wins.

Lee homered on a 3-2 count, on the 10th pitch he saw, into the first row in right-center to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the third. He pumped his fist slightly while rounding first once the ball cleared the fence. Lee, who entered 8 for 39 (.205), was given a curtain call by the crowd of 45,637, the Phillies’ 171st straight sellout.

After Lee had retired 11 straight, Uggla tied it at 1 by belting Lee’s first pitch of the fifth inning to deep left field.

Hanson, who entered holding hitters to a league-low .192 batting average, retired 10 straight after Lee’s homer before Mayberry’s two-out double to left in the sixth. After walking Chase Utley to put runners on first and second, Hanson struck out Howard with a 75 mph curve.

Atlanta got a runner to second with two outs in the eighth when Schafer reached on a bunt single and went to second on Lee’s throwing error. But Lee struck out Gonzalez to end the threat.

Philadelphia reliever Antonio Bastardo pitched a scoreless ninth, extending his scoreless streak to 15 innings. The left-hander has allowed just one hit in 45 at-bats during the stretch. Bastardo struck out Uggla to end the ninth, and the Braves’ second baseman dropped his bat, argued with plate umpire Mike Everitt before tossing his helmet toward the dugout in frustration. Manager Fredi Gonzalez came out to argue, as well, although neither was ejected.

Philadelphia left-hander Juan Perez, who struck out the side on nine pitches Friday, struck out two in a perfect 10th.

Atlanta’s Jonny Venters and Eric O’Flaherty combined to pitch two hitless innings in relief of Hanson, while Sherrill worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth. The Phillies loaded the bases in the 10th off Sherrill, but the left-hander got Mayberry to ground out to first to end the frame.

JONES OUT: Braves All-Star 3B Chipper Jones was placed on the disabled list before Saturday’s game with a torn meniscus in his right knee. Jones had a procedure Saturday in Atlanta and likely will miss two or three weeks.

Jair Jurrjens tries to continue his impressive start to
the season this evening when the Atlanta Braves continue their three-game
series against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Jurrjens, the National League’s top pitcher for the month of May, became just
the fourth pitcher in major league history to allow two earned runs or less
and pitch at least six innings in each of his first nine starts on Sunday
against Cincinnati. He held the Reds to a run and six hits in eight innings,
to improve to 7-1, while lowering his major league best earned run
average 1.51.

Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies set the record last year when he did it in his
first 12 starts. Like Jurrjens, Randy Johnson (2000) and Lefty Gomez (1937)
did so in their first nine outings to the season.

“It’s an honor,” Jurrjens said. “It’s not easy to be a starting pitcher in
this league. I went out there and knew the bullpen needed a rest. I just made
sure I kept my pitch count down and stay deeper in the game.”

Injuries limited the right-hander to just 20 starts a year ago, but a victory
this evening would surpass his total from last year and tie him for the NL
lead along with Pittsburgh’s Kevin Correia. Although, two other seven-game
winners – Milwaukee’s Yovani Gallardo and St. Louis’ Kyle Lohse – are also
slated to take the hill this evening.

Jurrjens threw seven scoreless innings to beat the Mets back on April 16 and
is 8-2 lifetime against them with a 2.54 ERA in 11 starts.

New York, meanwhile, will counter with an equally impressive righty in Dillon
Gee, who is 5-0 with a 3.83 ERA. Gee won his third straight start on Monday
against Pittsburgh, as he limited the Pirates to three runs and five hits in
seven innings.

Gee defeated Atlanta earlier in the year and is 1-1 in two starts against them
with a 2.84 ERA.

Atlanta rallied for a victory in Friday’s opener, as Eric Hinske’s solo, tie-
breaking home run off Francisco Rodriguez with one out in the ninth inning
boosted the Braves to a 6-3 win.

“I was thinking I’m going to try and ambush him, get something to hit over the
plate. It worked out,” said Hinske, who entered the game in the fifth inning
when Jordan Schafer was forced to leave after bunting a ball off his face.
“Sometimes you guess right and it’s part of the cat and mouse game.”

Freddie Freeman added a two-run double to cap the ninth inning uprising, as
the Braves topped the Mets for the 10th time in the last 12 meetings.

The Mets, who held a 3-1 lead going to the eighth inning, lost for the third
time in four games. Jose Reyes committed a critical error in the eighth, which
allowed the tying run to score.

Derek Lowe pitched six effective innings and Craig Kimbrel locked down his
17th save of the year. Kimbrel now has more saves before the All-Star break
than any rookie in NL history. Johnathan Papelbon holds the overall rookie
saves mark before the break with 26.

Jonny Venters (4-0) fanned a pair of batters in the eighth to get the win.

“We’ve got to continue to work together to get through these and add on some
runs,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Schafer reportedly has a broken nose, but he underwent more tests after the
game to see if there was any other damage.

While Rodriguez (1-2) suffered the loss, he has converted his last 16 save
chances, his longest streak in a season since equaling that mark to began the
2009 campaign.

Atlanta took two of three from the Mets earlier in the year.

The Atlanta Braves had not been swept at home by the San Diego Padres since 1989. Behind a strong effort from Tommy Hanson, a late home run by Martin Prado and solid bullpen work, it’ll be at least one more year before San Diego accomplishes that sweep.

The Braves scored in the first inning of Wednesday’s game, though they could have added on even more. Martin Prado ripped a double off the left-center field wall to get the rally started and Chipper Jones, Brian McCann, Freddie Freeman and Alex Gonzalez all followed with singles to give Atlanta an early 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded and just one out, Dan Uggla popped out for the second out and Joe Mather went down swinging to end the threat.

Tommy Hanson had a relatively quick first inning, but the Padres battled back in the second. After hitting the game-winning home run on Monday night, Padres rookie Kyle Phillips hit a 2-run home run to tie the game up.

Hanson appeared to be frustrated with himself after the blast, tough he settled down nicely and proceeded to dominate the Padres lineup after giving up the lead. He allowed just two walks and no hits after the home run, all while striking out four in six innings of work.

Freddie Freeman regained the lead for the Braves in the third inning. Brian McCann doubled to lead off the inning and Freeman followed with a check-swing double down the left field line which just stayed fair. Martin Prado added on in the sixth inning with a monster home run to left field, which was his eighth of the season. He’s now leads the team in homers.

Eric O’Flaherty made his return to the mound after battling a sore back and allowed a run in an inning of work. He gave way to Jonny Venters in the eighth inning, and Venters struck out all three batters he faced.

Craig Kimbrel came in the ninth and struck out the first two Padres batters he faced. Kyle Phillips singled on an 0-2 pitch to give San Diego hope, which brought up Logan Forsythe to the plate. Forsythe hit a deep line drive to center field, but Jordan Schafer made an incredible running catch for the final out of the game.

Be on the lookout for Schafer’s incredible catch on the nightly highlight reels. He covered a ton of ground to get to the ball and held on after a violent crash with the Turner Field wall.

Braves win 4-3. They still lost the series, but hey, you don’t win them all.

Atlanta will have an off-day tomorrow before heading up to New York to kick off a three game series with the New York Mets.

For more on the series, Padres fans should check out Gaslamp Ball and Braves fans should check out Talking Chop.

PITTSBURGH – Jair Jurrjens pitched six-hit ball into the eighth inning to lead the Atlanta Braves to a 2-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Jurrjens (6-1) struck out four and walked one in 7 2/3 innings while dropping his ERA to 1.56. Craig Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save.

Alex Gonzalez had three hits and scored a run for the Braves, who scratched out just enough offense to end Pittsburgh starter Charlie Morton’s three-game winning streak.

Morton (5-2) continued his strong start, giving up seven hits while striking out four and walking three in seven-plus innings.

Yet the former Brave couldn’t quite match Jurrjens, whose stuff has been electric this spring. The 25-year-old right-hander handcuffed the Pirates all night, needing just 97 pitches – 71 strikes – to send the Pirates to their second straight shutout loss.

The Braves came to town on the last stop of a miserable road trip in which they dropped four out of five and put starting outfielders Jason Heyward and Nate McLouth on the disabled list with injuries.

Jurrjens made sure none of it mattered against a Pirates offense that has suddenly stopped scoring runs.

Pittsburgh appeared to have found a groove last week, putting together a season-high four-game winning streak that pulled it within a game of .500. The Pirates scored 26 runs during the span but now haven’t scored in 19 innings.

Jurrjens didn’t give them much of a chance.

All five of Pittsburgh’s hits were singles and the Pirates were unable to capitalize on the few chances they had.

They managed to put two on with none out in the sixth thanks to an infield hit and a walk, but Neil Walker popped to shortstop and Lyle Overbay hit into an inning-ending double play.

Pittsburgh didn’t threaten again.

Atlanta pushed across a run in the second thanks to a rare flyball allowed by Morton, who has bounced back from an awful 2010 in which he went 2-12 with a 7.57 ERA.

He has become one of the National League’s biggest surprises behind a nasty sinker that has made opponents beat the ball into the ground with regularity.

He had won his last three decisions, including a shutout against Cincinnati last Thursday, and had a 2.62 ERA. More than 75 percent of his outs this season have come on groundballs.

The Braves didn’t get the ball in the air often, but they made it count when they did.

Gonzalez gave Atlanta a 1-0 lead in the second, coming home on a sacrifice fly by Brooks Conrad. They made it 2-0 an inning later thanks to an RBI double by Martin Prado.

Atlanta had a chance to break it open in the fifth but Morton benefited from an overzealous fan.

Prado beat out a double-play attempt to keep the inning alive and Chipper Jones followed with a deep drive to right-center. A fan reached over the fence and tried to grab the ball with a baseball cap but it squirted free and dropped onto the field. Umpires awarded Jones a ground-rule double, forcing Prado to stop at third. The call was upheld on replay and Morton got out of the jam when Brian McCann grounded out to first.

Not that it mattered. Two runs were all Jurrjens needed.

NOTES: Atlanta 2B Dan Uggla didn’t start for the first time this season but entered in the eighth as a defensive replacement. … Atlanta RHP Tim Hudson’s back is feeling much better. He will miss Wednesday’s scheduled start with back pain but is expected to be available when his next turn in the rotation comes on May 30. … Pittsburgh reliever Evan Meek pitched a scoreless ninth. Meek rejoined the club Sunday after spending time on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his right shoulder.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

PITTSBURGH — Charlie Morton remembers watching Jair Jurrjens pitch while the two were teammates in Atlanta and marveling at Jurrjens’ stuff.

“He was just dealing when I was there and I was just getting by,” Morton said with a laugh.

A few years later, Jurrjens still has the upperhand.

The 25-year-old right-hander continued his sparkling spring, pitching six-hit ball into the eighth inning to lead the Braves to a 2-0 win over Morton and the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Jurrjens (6-1) struck out four and walked one in 7 2-3 innings while dropping his ERA to 1.56. Craig Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save.

“I’m just trying to throw strikes,” Jurrjens said. “It’s not easy coming from a day off trying to pitch and the position players over there also had a day off, so you’re trying to take advantage of that and just throw strikes and make them get themselves out.”

The Pirates were only too happy to oblige. Pittsburgh never got a runner to third base while extending its scoreless streak to 19 innings.

Alex Gonzalez had three hits and scored a run for the Braves, who scratched out just enough offense to end Morton’s three-game winning streak.

Morton (5-2) continued his bounceback year, giving up seven hits while striking out four and walking three in seven-plus innings.

Yet he couldn’t quite match Jurrjens, who has been electric through the season’s first two months. He had little trouble with the punchless Pirates, needing just 97 pitches — 71 strikes — to send Pittsburgh to its second straight shutout loss.

Jurrjens’ control worsened as the game went on. He threw three balls total in the first three innings.

“I looked up and I saw the ball-strike thing and I was like, ‘Is that right?’” Morton said. “He’s really good at throwing the ball where he wants with all his pitches.”

He needed to be sharp to help the ailing Braves.

Atlanta came to town on the last stop of a miserable road trip in which it dropped four out of five and put starting outfielders Jason Heyward and Nate McLouth on the disabled list with injuries.

“Luckily we had JJ going tonight because we haven’t been scoring a lot of runs lately,” Atlanta first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “But when you get pitching like that — and our bullpen came in and shut it down — two runs was enough tonight.”

Pittsburgh appeared to have found a groove last week, putting together a season-high four-game winning streak that pulled it within a game of .500. The Pirates scored 26 runs during the span but haven’t crossed the plate since doing it three times in the seventh inning of a 6-2 win over Detroit on Saturday.

Then again, Jurrjens didn’t give them much of a chance.

“I think out of (his) pitches, there were maybe one or two that didn’t hit the mark where (catcher Brian) McCann set up,” Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “So when you have that kind of command with all your pitches, you’re going to be successful.”

Pittsburgh’s best opportunity came in the sixth when they put two on with no outs thanks to an infield hit and a walk, but Neil Walker popped to shortstop and Lyle Overbay hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Pirates didn’t threaten again.

Atlanta pushed across a run in the second thanks to a rare flyball allowed by Morton, who has bounced nicely back from an awful 2010 in which he went 2-12 with a 7.57 ERA.

He has become one of the National League’s biggest surprises behind a nasty sinker that has made opponents beat the ball into the ground with regularity.

He had won his last three decisions, including a shutout against Cincinnati last Thursday, and had a 2.62 ERA coming in.

The call was upheld on replay and Morton got out of the jam when McCann grounded out to first.

Not that it mattered. Two runs were all Jurrjens needed.

“He’s been like this all year — quality start after quality start,” Fredi Gonzalez said. “It’s just nice to see the consistency.”

Meek rejoined the club Sunday after spending time on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his right shoulder.
