Atlanta Braves Sign Wes Helms

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves are bringing back infielder Wes Helms, signing him to a minor league deal less than a week after he was released by the Florida Marlins.

The Braves said Wednesday that Helms will report to Triple-A Gwinnett this weekend and likely join the Braves when the rosters
are expanded Sept. 1 to provide another right-handed bat off the
bench. The Marlins released Helms last Saturday. He was hitting just
.191 with six RBIs.

The 35-year-old is returning to his original team, playing with the Braves from 1998-2002. Also, Atlanta activated right-hander Jair Jurrjens from the disabled list to start against the San Francisco Giants.

Right-hander Randall Delgado, who pitched six hitless innings
Tuesday, was optioned to Gwinnett.

Braves Take Five

HOUSTON (AP) — Brian McCann hit a three-run homer in the 10th
inning, lifting the Atlanta Braves to their fifth straight win, 6-3
over the Houston Astros on Saturday night.

McCann’s shot to right field off Brandon Lyon scored Jordan
Schafer and Dan Uggla to give him 501 career RBIs and put Atlanta
on top 5-2. Schafer singled before Uggla walked.

The Astros have lost seven of eight.

Lyon (3-3) struggled to throw strikes in his second appearance
since coming off the disabled list this week. He also gave up a
homer in Friday’s loss to the Braves.

Chipper Jones hit his second double after McCann’s homer to
chase Lyon and scored on a two-out single by Eric Hinske to make it
6-2.

Braves’ Heyward lands on DL

The Atlanta Braves placed right fielder Jason
Heyward on the 15-day disabled list following Sunday’s game against the
Angels.

Heyward, who has been playing through pain and discomfort in his right
shoulder, is batting .214 with seven homers and 14 RBI in 45 games this
season.

After leaving a May 10 game against the Nationals because of numbness in his
right hand and forearm, Heyward missed six starts because of the injury. An
ensuing MRI exam revealed no significant damage.

The Braves recalled outfielder Wilkin Ramirez from Triple-A Gwinnett, and
transferred pitcher Peter Moylan to the 60-day disabled list to free up a spot
on the 40-man roster for Ramirez.

Ramirez was batting .248 with seven homers and 16 RBI over 33 games for
Gwinnett this year.

Braves RHP Beachy to DL with strained oblique

Updated: May 15, 2011, 11:35 AM ET

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves have placed right-hander Brandon Beachy on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique and recalled reliever Scott Proctor from Triple-A Gwinnett.

The Braves made the move Sunday after Beachy left Friday night’s game against the Phillies with the injury. The rookie is 1-1 with a 3.45 ERA.

The 34-year-old Proctor was 1-0 with a 1.06 ERA and three saves in 14 games with Gwinnett. He had a 6.35 ERA in six games with Atlanta last season.

The Braves plan to make another move to fill Beachy’s spot in the rotation Wednesday in Arizona.

Proctor was released by the Braves on March 27. The right-hander signed a minor league deal with the team April 3.

Braves place Jurrjens on DL

Updated Apr 3, 2011 1:50 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AP)

The Atlanta Braves have put right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right oblique muscle.

The club announced the move Sunday, making it retroactive to March 25.

The Braves recalled left-hander Mike Minor from Triple-A Gwinnett.

Jurrjens was hurt in Atlanta’s game against Toronto on March 24 and has been slow to recover. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Jurrjens would throw a simulated game in Gwinnett this week. After a start next week, he should be ready to return on April 16.

Jurrjens spent time on the DL with a strained left hamstring last season, when he was 7-6 with a 4.64 ERA. His season ended in mid-September with a knee injury.

Minor was 3-2 with a 5.98 ERA in nine games with the Braves in 2010.
