Cody Ross joined the San Francisco Giants in August of 2010 after being waived by the Florida Marlins. He then somehow became an offensive powerhouse for the rest of the regular season and throughout the postseason. He brought in two of the team’s winning runs in the team’s three victories in the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves. He hammered two homers off of Roy Halladay in the first game of the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies and went on to be the MVP of that series, batting .350, as the Giants went on to win the World Series against the Texas Rangers.

That kind of offensive power didn’t stick with him for the 2011 season. He hit .240 with 14 homers and 25 doubles in 121 games for the Giants this past season. And now the 31-year-old veteran of five teams is looking for a new home.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the Atlanta Braves have some interest in Ross but “would want the price to keep coming down.” The word from the AJC is that Ross “wants something in the neighborhood of the two-year, $10 million deal that Dave DeJesus got” from the Chicago Cubs. But it’s hard to see that happening.

The paper also notes that Ross is said to be talking to the Oakland Athletics about a possible deal.

ATLANTA (AP)

The Atlanta Braves have offered condolences to head trainer Jeff Porter, saying team members were ”deeply saddened” after his wife was killed when an SUV driven by the trainer was hit by a Georgia State Patrol cruiser.

State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said the trooper was traveling in downtown Atlanta with lights and siren activated Saturday afternoon when the cruiser struck the SUV at an intersection. Wright says the trooper was trying to help another trooper stop a motorcyclist.

Authorities say Kathy Porter, a passenger in the SUV, died. Police say Jeff Porter and two other passengers, the couple’s 19-year-old son David and a friend, were taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries and later released.

The trooper was examined at the same hospital and released.

Instead, the battered sports franchise is taking on Burbank, Calif.-based The Walt Disney Co.

Disney/Pixar’s latest animated film, “Brave,” which centers on a flame-haired Scottish princess with a talent for archery, already is garnering publicity six months prior to its projected release. The Atlanta Braves reportedly filed a “formal objection” with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office after Disney’s most recent attempt to trademark various iterations of the title on Oct. 20.

The team has until Jan. 18, 2012, to file opposition papers with the Trademark Trial and Appeals board, according to reports.

Though the Atlanta National League Ball Club, which owns the Atlanta Braves, holds only the rights to the word “Braves,” it alleges the fans, media and others commonly use the word “Brave” to refer to a single player and “Braves” to refer to the entire team.

Its objection stems from the fear that Disney’s use of the singular form will lead to confusion and even damage due to the team’s use of “Brave” in its merchandising.

Another baseball franchise, the New York Mets, has amicably shared a variation of its name with two local institutions, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Opera House, both commonly referred to as “The Met.”

The Atlanta National League Ball Club and Disney Co. reportedly were in negotiations to settle the dispute.

According to Disney news blog Stitch Kingdom, the Atlanta Braves aren’t big fans of upcoming animated film “Brave.”

This summer, the Atlanta National League Baseball Club (owners of the Atlanta Braves), reportedly filed an objection to Disney’s attempts to trademark the title “Brave.” The team claims that the upcoming animated film’s moniker is already being used by their organization.

Although the Braves don’t own any trademarks for the word “Brave” (only “Braves”), they insist that damages will occur as a result of the trademarks being approved.

The team claims that they’ve used the singular form of Braves on merchandise, and say that “Brave” is used when referring to a single player (as opposed to the whole team being the “Braves.”)

The Walt Disney Company and the Atlanta National League Ball Club are said to be currently involved in private negotiations.

The 3-D fantasy adventure movie – produced by Pixar and released by Disney – will hit theaters June 22. The kids flick follows a courageous girl from the Highlands of Scotland.

The 2012 Atlanta Braves Country Caravan will stop in Auburn, Ala., on Jan. 29.

It will be one of 40 stops for the caravan, which also will be in Macon, Ga., on Jan. 31.

According to a news release, the caravan, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will include players, coaches and executives. More details about where and when the caravan will be are supposed to be announced later.

According to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding, the Colorado Rockies and Atlanta Braves have been talking about a deal that would send outfielder Seth Smith to Atlanta for Martin Prado, though the Rockies likely would include a prospect in the deal as well. The Rockies have been frustrated in attempts to add starting pitching, Harding writes, so improving the situation at second base has become the top priority:

The Rockies’ main need is a durable starting pitcher, but they have shown no interest in dealing the multiple prospects that many teams require for such a deal. So adding another bat at second base, where the Rockies for now have a possible combination of former first-round Draft pick Chris Nelson and solid multi-position man Jonathan Herrera, has risen to the top of the pecking order.

The 27-year-old Prado hit .260/.302/.385 with the Braves in 2011.

While the Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins have been creating headlines with their signings of Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson and Jose Reyes, countless teams have been slow movers. Among those teams are the Atlanta Braves. The Braves stopped playing ball once the calendar changed to September this past season, leaving fans hoping for money to be spent and changes to be made.

To start the offseason, the Braves ate a big portion of Derek Lowe’s contract and shipped him to Cleveland for Chris Jones. Jones pitched for Single-A Kinston in 2011, going 7-1 with a 3.36 ERA in 43 games. The Braves also saw their ace, Tim Hudson go under the knife to fix his ailing back. Add in the doubt to the health of Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens, and the Braves rotation could be quite different in 2012.

Since the Braves season ended, rumors started about possibly trading Jurrjens and/or Martin Prado. While those rumors haven’t led to anything as of yet, for the right price, both could see themselves playing elsewhere next season. What moves have actually been close this far for the Braves?

Earlier in the offseason, the Braves picked up the option on infielder Eric Hinske, while declining the option on center fielder, Nate McLouth. Hinske hit .233 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs, while McLouth hit .228 with four home runs and 16 RBIs. McLouth has never been able to get going in Atlanta, and was expendable with the acquisition of Michael Bourn.

Relief pitcher Peter Moylan and utility infielder Brooks Conrad were both non-tendered contracts, making them free agents. Moylan appeared in just 13 games last season, spending most of the time on the disabled list. He was 2-1 with a 3.24 ERA. Conrad, the 2010 playoffs goat for the Braves had a terrible season, hitting just .223 with four home runs and 13 RBIs.

The Braves appear to be looking at prospect Tyler Pastornicky as their starter at shortstop, as they allowed Alex Gonzalez to sign with the Milwaukee Brewers. The defensive stud suffered through a horrible offensive campaign, hitting just .241 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs.

In a division that has seen the Washington Nationals improve over the years, Miami and the Philadelphia Phillies improve this offseason, the National League East could be a scary division to play in. Atlanta needs to start making moves soon, or they could see a fourth place finish in 2012.

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves are not offering a contract to right-hander Peter Moylan, who has been one of the team’s top relievers the last six years.

The 31-year-old Moylan has appeared in 80 or more games in three of the last five seasons. He missed most of last season because of back surgery before needing another surgery for a torn rotator cuff and labrum.

Moylan is 19-9 with a 2.60 ERA in his career.

The Braves also declined to offer a contract to utility infielder and pinch-hitter Brooks Conrad on Tuesday. He hit .223 with four homers and 13 RBIs last season.

The Braves have four arbitration-eligible players on their 40-man roster: right-hander Jair Jurrjens, left-hander Eric O’Flaherty, left fielder and infielder Martin Prado and center fielder Michael Bourn.

The 23-year-old Fish has been used mostly as a reliever over six minor-league seasons with the Angels and gives the Braves another left-handed option out of the bullpen. He was acquired during the winter meetings in Dallas.

Last season, Fish struck out 41 over 30 1-3 innings with a 3.26 ERA at Double-A Arkansas. For his career, he is 21-20 with a 4.87 ERA.
