Right behind Prado, though, is Los Angeles Angels infielder Maicer Izturis(notes), sources tell Fox, to help fill the crucial holes for Detroit: second base, third base and the leadoff spot. The 31-year-old, switch-hitting Izturis “has filled all of those roles over an eight-year career,” Fox notes, but this season marked the first time in his career he played more than 120 games in a major-league season. Fox notes, though, that the Tigers have Ryan Raburn(notes), Brandon Inge(notes) and Don Kelly(notes) to share time with Izturis if he can’t play every game. Next year is the final year of Izturis’ deal and he’s scheduled to make $3.8 million, the site notes. Last year, he hit .276 with 35 doubles and five homers in 122 games. Let the rumors come to you. | Top Five Second Basemen in Atlanta Braves History
Qualifiers: players will be classified under one position even if they played at more than one. They must also have at least two seasons with the team. Bobby Lowe: Bobby Lowe manned second base during the early Boston days in the 1890s. Lowe played 1,411 games over 12 seasons with the team, hitting for power and OBP at various times while also being regarded as a top notch glove man. In 1894, he finished second in the league in home runs with 17 including the first four-homer game ever recorded. He batted .300 three times and reached base at a .342 clip overall, topping out at .401. At 25.2, Lowe tallied the highest career WAR (wins above replacement) of any Braves’ second baseman and his 260 stolen bases are good for fourth in Braves history. Johnny Evers: Hall of Fame second baseman Johnny Evers led the Braves to the first World Series Championship in franchise history. By the time he joined the Braves, Evers already established himself as one of the game’s great contact hitters with an elite batting eye. In his first year with the team, he won the 1914 NL MVP award to lead the Braves to the title. He maintained a .366 OBP and 100 OPS+ (league average is 100) over three-plus seasons as a Brave. Glenn Hubbard: Former All-Star Glenn Hubbard spent ten years manning second base for the Atlanta Braves from 1978 to 1987. Hubbard gave the Braves great defense up the middle and a good batting eye at the plate. He walked nearly as often as he struck out, posted an 85 OPS+ and totaled 17.4 WAR during his tenure in Atlanta. After his playing career, Hubbard went on to coach first base for the Braves for more than a decade. Marcus Giles: Recent All-Star Marcus Giles had the best offensive career of any Braves’ second baseman. Giles peaked high and fizzled quickly; he notched an OPS as high as .917, but played his last Major League game in his age 29 season. From 2003 to 2005, he averaged 5.0 WAR per season with a .305 average, .377 OBP and 121 OPS+. He averaged 15 home runs and 15 stolen bases per season during those three peak years before his performance began to dip. Davey Johnson: His time with the Braves was short, but he made the most of it. Davey Johnson gave Atlanta one of the best power-hitting years by any second baseman in 1973 when he cracked 43 home runs and slugged .546 for a 143 OPS+. He tied the record for most home runs by a second baseman in a single season. As a Brave, Johnson went to one of his four All-Star Games and maintained a .843 OPS over 294 games. Honorable mentions: Frank Bolling, Jack Burdock, Tony Cuccinello, Rogers Hornsby (one year), Kelly Johnson(notes), Mark Lemke, Felix Millan, Connie Ryan, Red Schoendienst, Eddie Stanky and Bill Sweeney. | Braves Offseason News: Tim Hudson Undergoes…
Read More: Tim Hudson (P – ATL), Jair Jurrjens (P – ATL), Tommy Hanson (P – ATL), Atlanta Braves Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Tim Hudson underwent successful surgery on Monday to repair a herniated disk in his back. While his recovery and progression will be closely monitored throughout the rest of the offseason, the team expects Hudson to be ready for the start of Spring Training. From the official release out of Atlanta:
Hudson missed a start in May because of a back issue and this would appear to be the reason why. Anyone who has ever dealt with a back issue can tell you the injury has a knack for lingering and not responding to treatment, and it is a minor miracle Hudson made it through the entire season without hitting the disabled list. The Braves starting rotation continues to be dinged up and it may convince Frank Wren to hold onto his pitchers this offseason. With the uncertainty of Tommy Hanson’s shoulder, Jair Jurrjens’ knee and Hudson’s back, Atlanta hasn’t exactly had a clean bill of health in the last year. Leave any suggestions in the comment box.
